Our blood donor program helps to ensure that we have a sufficient supply of canine and feline blood products for our patients.
Canine Blood Donor Program
Dr. Kyes along with hospital technician, Becky Millett, started the canine donor program in January 2010 due to a significant shortage of blood products. This is an invaluable service and we are always looking for canine donors. Every donation can help to save a life.
Canine Blood Donor Criteria
Your dog:
- Must be greater than 50 lbs.
- Must be between 1-8 years old
- Must have a docile temperament
- Must not have a history of blood transfusions
- Should be in good health and free of any disease
Canine Blood Donor Benefits
If your dog becomes a blood donor they will receive the following:
- Blood work
- Fecal floatation
- Heartworm and tick testing
- Blood typing
If your dog's blood type is 'negative' and if the blood work and health screen are normal, your dog will officially enter the blood donor program. Your pet can potentially donate every 3 months (4 times a year). Donations take less than 30 minutes and generally do not require any sedation.
Lily's life was saved because of the blood she received.
